General Garage Door Questions

Do I need a professional to install/repair my garage door, or can I do it myself?

How long does it take to install a garage door?

Answering this question depends on the type of garage door a client selects, the number of doors being installed, and the size of those doors. For example, a commercial job for multiple garage door installations will likely take longer than a residential job that involves installing 2 garage doors. However, a good estimate is 2-4 hours.

Do your company offer free estimates?

Yes, we do! We are happy to come to our customer’s residential or commercial property and discuss the project at length, and then give you an estimate of what you can expect cost-wise.

What type of garage door is best?

There are benefits and inconveniences to any carport entryway that you pick. For example, a steel door is low maintenance and affordable, but may not be the aesthetic a client is looking for, while a wooden door is beautifully rustic,  but is not as durable. Therefore, we cannot answer which garage door is best- it depends on your wants, needs, and budget! However, you can expect our team to work closely with you to help you choose an option that you will be happy with for decades.

Garage Door Spring Questions

Can you fix the springs on my garage door?

YES. We are broken spring specialists. Our replacement torsion springs are heavy duty, high cycle, oil tempered springs that do not require lubrication and can last over 4 times as long as typical garage door springs.

Should I fix a broken garage door spring myself?

The simple answer is no. Fixing a garage door spring yourself is dangerous. Each time you open and close your garage door, its entire weight is transferred onto the spring system. For this reason, it can be extremely dangerous when a spring breaks, and it’s considered highly risky for homeowners to attempt to replace or repair springs themselves.

Which garage door springs do I have?

What is a garage door seal?

Garage door seals are also known as weatherstripping and astragal. Seals are found around all four edges of the garage door. How important is garage door maintenance?

Simple Maintenance Checks to Keep Your Garage Door in Good Condition

• It is easy to perform simple garage door safety checks and maintenance tasks. If you are not the DIY type, you will probably want to get these tests done by a qualified service technician.

Important SAFETY NOTE: To stay safe and to avoid injury, tell everyone in your family that you are going to check the garage door. Ask them not to close or open the garage door until you tell them that you are finished.

Here is a simple overview of the tests and maintenance tasks you need to perform.

Monthly visual inspection:

• Get inside the garage and close its door. Inspect the garage door rollers, springs, pulleys, cables, and mounting hardware like hinges. Look for visible signs of wear and tear. Has the mounting hardware become loose? What about the cable? Is it showing signs of wear? If things do not look right or sound right, maybe there is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. If you suspect that something is wrong, get your garage door system serviced by an experienced professional.

Monthly door balance test:

• Perform this test if your garage door has an automatic opener system.

How to program the garage door opener in your car?

You have bought a new car and you want your garage door to be controlled from your car.

‘It must be easy,’ you tell yourself. After all, the owner’s manual has all the instructions. So, you grab the door opener remote control and start reading the instructions carefully.

You follow the instructions and then press the button. Nothing happens. Why doesn’t the door open? Did you miss anything?

Yes, you missed an important step.

Owner instruction manuals sometimes leave out some steps involved in programming a car to the door opener.

So how do I program the Garage Door Opener in my car?

Shown here is a logic board. It is easy to see the red / orange square shaped learn button. Press and release – that is what you should do. Do not hold it down.

Where is the logic board?

Your garage door has a panel called the logic board on its back side. It is the brain of the door opener. Modern garage door openers are multi-code machines. That means every time you press a button on the remote, the opener uses several signals. This ensures security by preventing a code grabber from stealing your code.

Now let us see how the vehicle can be programmed to the door opener. First, follow the instructions on programming the car. Now you must ‘teach’ the vehicle to communicate with the door opener.

You need someone to help you with this.

First, ask someone to press the button in the car. Tell them not to release it. They should keep it pressed down. Meanwhile, someone else should press the learn button on the back of the garage door opener installed on the ceiling. Most door openers have a square shaped learn button in red, yellow, purple, or orange color.

The learn button on the opener should be released as soon as it is pushed. Do not hold it down. If you keep it pressed down all the programming will be erased. You will then have to reprogram all the remotes you have. That is not going to be a pleasant experience.

It takes only a second to program the car to the door opener. When the opener accepts the code, the bulb on it will flash for a second and you will hear a click.

As you can see, it is easy. The problem is that this last step is not included in most instruction manuals. Now that you have learned it, you can go ahead and program your door opener.

What to consider for garage door spring replacement?

• Spring Cycles — A spring endures a single cycle every time the garage door is opens or closes. Generic springs typically offer between 5000 – 10,000 cycles. But the high-grade steel springs we use last between 25,000–50,000 cycles and benefit from a warranty.

• Corrosion — Springs can corrode in certain climates, putting mechanisms at risk for sudden failure. Our springs are lubricated to prevent corrosion, offering superior resistance to damage caused by corrosion, erosion, and friction.

Springs are typically under incredible amounts of stress. Because of this, garage door spring replacement should be a job for the specialists. We recommend that property owners with malfunctioning garage door springs call our emergency service as soon as garage door spring problems are apparent. Do not attempt to force the garage door shut.

How to align safety sensors on your garage door?

If your garage door is going down and reversing back up, try this simple solution to get it fixed.

The lights on both the sending and receiving sensors will glow steadily when the wiring connections and alignment are correct.  The amber light on the sending sensor will glow regardless of alignment or obstruction.  (Meaning this light will always be on no matter what) If the green light on the receiving sensor is off, dim, or flickering (and the invisible light beam path is not obstructed), alignment is required.

Note:  On the older safety sensors both lights are green.  The receiving sensors are the sensors that the green light goes out when you pass your hand in front of the sensors.  The sending sensor stays solid.

Before you take off the photo eye try just adjusting it to make it see the other one by wiggling it into place if that does not work take the following steps.

1. Remove the receiving sensor (green light) from bracket.  You can do so by taking off the wing nut.

2. Point the sensor away from the sending sensor, so that the light is completely off.

3. Once the light is off, wait 10 seconds.

4. Slowly rotate sensor back, aligning sensor with sending sensor, until it lights up green again.  When you have a strong green light, put it back into the bracket and put the wing nut back on.

Note:  If you are unable to get the door closed and the safety sensors are the issue, the garage door can be closed by pressing and holding the push button on the wall until down travel is completed.

Why do I need garage door safety inspection?

All garage doors that are mechanical could fail. Most of the time when a garage door fails, it will not open or close easily, if at all. Leaving the door this way could endanger residents or visitors. It could also cause additional damage, which can become costly. Rather, what you should do is call a technician. A safety inspection keeps your door working properly and as a result – safe. Do not be the person who waits until something goes wrong. So, if you need safety inspection or even a garage door repair, contact us.

• Corrosion — Springs can corrode in certain climates, putting mechanisms at risk for sudden failure. Our springs are lubricated to prevent corrosion, offering superior resistance to damage caused by corrosion, erosion, and friction.

How do I choose a garage door opener?

With so many different types of garage door openers on the market, you may not be sure where to start. The main consideration for a garage door opener is the drive type, which refers to the actual chain, belt, or other mechanism that moves and lifts the door. In some circumstances, the horsepower output of the motor should be considered as well, but typically in commercial or industrial settings. Whether for a home garage or something heftier, you can easily determine the type of opener best suited to your needs.

DRIVE OPTIONS

Carport entryway openers by and large offer a comparative plan. They have an engine, which drives a carriage or streetcar along a rail.

The three main types of garage door opener drives are chain, screw and belt:

HORSEPOWER OPTIONS

You’ll also encounter a range of horsepower options. To determine which horsepower you require, you should first consider the size and weight of your garage door.

AC VS. DC POWER

Another decision you will have to make is whether you want an opener with AC or DC power. While both are designed to perform the same function.

BACKUP POWER

You want to have a garage door opener that continues to function if the power goes out.

ROLLING CODE TECHNOLOGY

If you are interested in added safety and security, consider rolling code technology. In days past, it was possible for a neighbor to have the same exact garage door code as yours. Today, garage door openers with rolling code technology create a new and secure code from among billions of options each time you use the garage door.

How do I open a garage door without power?

Automatic garage door openers make accessing and securing your garage easy and convenient. But if the power goes out, you may be wondering how you can open it up. Luckily, opening a garage door without power is simple and easy. Locate the red emergency cord on the automatic opener and pull it to disengage the opener. You can then open and close the door manually by raising it up and lowering it. When the power comes back on and you are ready to re-engage the door, close the door, pull the string to re-engage the automatic opener, and slide the door onto the track.

How do I replace the rollers on my garage door?

  • Garage door rollers help make it easier to open your garage, but over time, they can wear out and put a strain on the tracks and opening mechanism. When it is time to replace the rollers on your garage, you can easily do it on your own with a few tools. While most of the rollers can be changed near the vertical track of your garage door, the top 2 rollers need to be changed on the horizontal track. Once you change the rollers, your garage door will open smoothly.
